چکیده

Many branches of computer science rely on logical formalisms as their foundations. Logic provides a very solid foundation on which to build new results: after 2500 years of research, logic provides us with a strong set of theoretical notions: model theory, proof theory, completeness, correctness; there exists a well established body of knowledge concerning properties such expressiveness, decidability, complexity results, etc; and, in particular since the very fruitful encounter with Computer Science in the last half century, we have at our disposal a rich battery of algorithms for implementing logical formalisms on a computer: resolution, tableau-reasoning, local-search methods, etc. However, these strong foundations also come with a disadvantage: Logic aims to mode perfect reasoners under ideal circumstances. Logic does not tell us how to deal with mistakes during the deduction process; logical formalisms assume unlimited resources and fully available and fully correct knowledge. Logic does not study what it means to have “half a proof”, or what it would mean for a theorem to be “almost true”. As a result of all this, the deduction models that logic provides us with are crisp, abrupt, inefficient:

Initial Empirical Evaluation of Anytime Lifted Belief Propagation

Lifted first-order probabilistic inference, which manipulates first-order representations of graphical models directly, has been receiving increasing attention. Most lifted inference methods to date need to process the entire given model before they can provide information on a query’s answer, even if most of it is determined by a relatively small, local portion of the model. Anytime Lifted Bel...

Anytime Reasoning Mechanism for Conversational Agents

When an agent receives a query from another agent, it tries to satisfy it by building an answer based on its current knowledge. Depending on the available time or the urgency of the requirement the agent can produce answers with different levels of quality. Answers can contain the best one, a provisional one because it can be improved later, or a conditional answer because the agent ignores som...

An optimal method based on rationalized Haar wavelet for approximate answer of stochastic Ito-Volterra integral equations

This article proposes an optimal method for approximate answer of stochastic Ito-Voltrra integral equations, via rationalized Haar functions and their stochastic operational matrix of integration. Stochastic Ito-voltreea integral equation is reduced to a system of linear equations. This scheme is applied for some examples. The results show the efficiency and accuracy of the method.
